We fell in love with Maui from the beginning. When she was diagnosed with renal disease, her chances were not good. My husband and I were determined to give her the best life she could have in hopes that it would make a difference. Relying on many prayers and fantastic medical directive, we made the decision to have faith and enjoy every day we have with her.
Soon after Maui's arrival, I began writing a diary of our lives with Maui. As she turned one year old and was feeling good, I decided to write the book, intending to give hope to others in similar situations. Doing good is healing for the soul.
I believe that Maui had a real purpose in life. Born with kidney disease at birth, few people would think for a moment she could live life as she does. Maui has shown us that she is doing great despite the odds of her diagnosis. Grateful to share our lives with such an incredible golden, we feel blessed.
Maui is such a great example of unconditional love; it is through her that I have been allowed to create an outreach for our children to learn the basics of integrity and moral ethics.
We are fortunate that Maui lives a close-to-normal life without medication. She recently turned four this year and is still hiking, playing, and enjoying life. She continues to eat well too.
Every day that goes by, we focus on all the blessings of her health.
The challenge is to avoid feeling like you're waiting for something to change with her condition.
We need to be on our toes all the time, making sure she doesn't eat sticks or do something that would possibly cause the need for surgery; or something that would trigger her kidneys. There are some things like jumping into a lake with her friends, and she can't do or eat ice cream. We always need to be cautious.
Maui is currently doing well and living a normal life without medications; however, she is on a prescription diet.
